Match Day Checklist: What to Pack in Your Tennis Bag

Every club has that player: the one who arrives, unzips one compartment, and produces exactly the thing someone else forgot — a spare grip, a dry shirt, the sunscreen. Nobody is born that player. They just built the bag once, properly, and stopped thinking about it. Here's the complete match-day checklist, organized the way you'll actually pack it, with honest notes on what matters and what's dead weight.

The non-negotiables

  • Two shirts, not one. The single highest-value item in the bag after your racquet. A dry performance shirt before a third set resets your body temperature and your head. Veterans treat the mid-match shirt change like a ritual because it works.
  • Water + electrolytes. A liter minimum for a match; two in summer. The players cramping in third sets are almost never the ones who packed salt.
  • Overgrips. Sweaty grips lose you free points. Two spares weigh nothing.
  • Court shoes on your feet, not in the bag — but toss in spare laces. A snapped lace with no backup is a retired match over a $3 part.

The comfort layer

  • Warm-up layer. A tennis hoodie earns permanent bag residency three seasons a year: warm-up, between-match cool-down, and the drive home. Cold muscles after a match stiffen fast; the layer is injury prevention disguised as comfort.
  • Headband or wristbands. If sweat reaches your grip hand or your eyes, you're donating points. Cheap insurance.
  • Small towel. Changeover ritual, grip management, and the universal signal that you take your tennis seriously.
  • Hat + sunscreen. Day matches are two-plus hours of exposure. Reapply at the set break — the players who don't are easy to spot by August.

The fix-it kit (one zip pocket, never think about it again)

  • Blister tape or plasters — the difference between finishing and limping.
  • Ibuprofen, a couple of bands for dampeners, a spare dampener.
  • Phone charger brick — league nights run long, and your scores app, your ride, and your excuse to your family all live on that phone.
  • A few dollars cash for court fees and ball machines that predate contactless.

Pack for your format

Tournament day: multiply shirts by possible matches, plus one. Multi-match days are where the warm-up layer and real food stop being optional.

Summer sessions: everything in the hot-weather guide applies — lightest shirts you own, light colors, and double the water you think you need.

What NOT to pack

The five racquets you never string, the foam roller you've used once, the second pair of shoes "just in case." A match bag should close with one hand. Weight you carry is energy you don't spend on court — ruthlessness is a performance feature.

Common questions

What's the most-forgotten item?

Does the bag itself matter?

Less than the contents. Any bag with a separate shoe/wet compartment works; tennis bags are mostly racquet real estate, and paddles or a change of clothes ride along fine.
