You've been drilling your serve, grinding out practice sets, and visualizing yourself lifting the trophy. Then you show up to your first tournament match and realize you forgot a spare shirt. Now you're playing the second round in a sweat-soaked tee that weighs three pounds, and your confidence is somewhere in the parking lot.

Don't let bad preparation undo good practice. Here's everything you need to pack for a tennis tournament, whether it's a local USTA event or a weekend invitational.

Clothing: The Non-Negotiable Layer

Pack more shirts than you think you need. The general rule is two performance shirts per match day, plus one extra. If you're playing two matches on Saturday, that's five shirts minimum. Sounds excessive until you're three games into your second match and grateful for the fresh one in your bag.

Every shirt should be moisture-wicking polyester or poly-blend — never cotton. Cotton retains sweat, gets heavy, and breeds bacteria in your bag between matches. Performance crew necks are the tournament standard: lightweight, breathable, and they dry fast enough to reuse in an emergency.

Beyond shirts, pack two pairs of tennis shorts, fresh socks for each match (this matters more than you think), and a light layer for warm-ups or cooler mornings.

Court Accessories

Your racket bag handles the obvious — rackets, grips, dampeners. But tournament play demands more from your accessories kit. Pack a performance headband or cap for sun and sweat management. Bring two if you're playing multiple matches — a soaked headband is about as useful as no headband.

A courtside towel is essential, not optional. Between changeovers, you need something absorbent to dry your hands, face, and arms. Pick one that's oversized enough to drape over your chair and visible enough that you won't leave it behind.

Hydration and Nutrition

A quality stainless steel water bottle keeps drinks cold through an entire match, even in summer heat. Pack at least 64 ounces of water per match, plus an electrolyte mix for anything over an hour. Bananas, energy bars, and trail mix are the tournament food staples — easy to eat during changeovers and they won't sit heavy in your stomach.

Avoid trying new foods or drinks on tournament day. Your stomach doesn't need surprises when you're serving at 5-all in the third set.

Recovery Gear

Between matches, your body needs help resetting. Pack a foam roller or massage ball for tight muscles, compression sleeves if you're prone to arm or calf issues, and sunscreen (reapply between matches, not just at the start of the day).

A fresh performance tee for each match isn't just about comfort — dry fabric reduces chafing and keeps your body temperature regulated. It's recovery gear disguised as clothing.

The Bag Itself

For multi-match tournament days, you need a bag that separates clean gear from dirty gear. A drawstring bag works as a secondary bag for wet clothes and towels — keeps the smell quarantined from your fresh gear.

The Complete Checklist

Here's your tournament packing list: 2-3 performance shirts per match day, 2 pairs of shorts, socks for each match, headband or cap (x2), courtside towel, water bottle (64oz+), electrolyte mix, bananas and energy bars, sunscreen SPF 30+, extra overgrips, a drawstring bag for dirty gear, foam roller or massage ball, a light warm-up layer, and something comfortable for between matches.

Print this list. Tape it inside your racket bag. The first time it saves you from showing up without a spare shirt, you'll be glad you did.
